Self-confident people put faith in their abilities, which is a hard thing to do if you physically can not do certain things. Does that mean disabled people aren’t self-confident? No way. Huge improvements in quality of life, job possibilities, laws, and general treatment can all be traced back to disabled people who believed in themselves. A blind man didn’t think he could see if he looked hard enough, but he did believe he could perform a job, get from place to place, and live life as any “normal” adult. He definitely believed he deserved the same consideration as anybody else.

The Diagnosis is a Starting Point

Some people’s disabilities are obvious. They can’t hear. They can’t see. They have a deformity that keeps them, physically, from completing a task. Others are trickier to pin down, and easily misdiagnosed.

People who feel unable to perform normal tasks because of physical or emotional traits need to get to a doctor and figure their problems out.

Jessica put off going to the doctor because she thought she was just tired. Then one day she couldn’t pick up her son. A trip to the doctor confirmed she was suffering from muscular dystrophy, and her problems were only just starting.

Instead of giving up, Jessica used the time that she had to prepare herself for success during the worst of her illness.

Use your diagnosis as a way to plan for future obstacles, as well as ways to deal with them. You cannot possibly for see every problem you might come across, but you can track down the most common elements and devise multiple plans of attack.

Trying New Things

If you’re disabled, you might find yourself avoiding new things out of the fear of drawing attention to yourself or putting someone else through an inconvenience. There are things you can put in place to keep from feeling so nervous.

Do your research. If you’re interested in doing something, chances are another disabled person has wanted to try it out. You might be surprised to find your interest is completely accessible, or could be if providers would make a few simple adjustments.

If you see an opportunity when you’re out and about, talk to the people you’re with before making a decision. They probably won’t mind a longer wait and can calm your nerves about people stopping to watch.

The confidence boost you get from trying something new, whether or not it’s a success, will help drive you toward your larger goals. It’s a step that can’t be missed.

Working With Protective Care Givers

Sometimes the people who help care for us are the ones who get in the way. Before you attempt something new, have your discussion planned. Highlight the major benefits, but be realistic about your risks. Be prepared to listen, and let them work at their own pace.

The people who have been through the worst with us will always be afraid they’ll have to face them again. Be patient and try smaller steps to boost their confidence in you.

Regardless of their level of support, help them help you prepare for failure. You need someone beside you who isn’t going to say, “You can’t try this again.” You need a support system that is encouraging, and focuses on the positive.

Support Groups

It’s hard for people who don’t share your disability to really understand how you feel. There’s no substitute for dealing with what you do. Support groups offer you understanding and support from people who face similar issues.

Similar, not the same. No one is you. No one can judge your abilities and limitations better than you can. No one can determine what is possible for you, but you. And that’s the end result of building up your self-confidence.

That is the end result for anyone. This is a tool for enjoying life to its fullest. It’s not a system for telling you how to live, how to feel, and it is not a guideline for what you should be striving for.

Self-Discipline for Success
by Brian Tracy

There is one special quality that you can develop that will guarantee you greater success, accomplishment and happiness in life. Of a thousand principles for success developed over the ages, this one quality or practice will do more to assure that you accomplish wonderful things with your life than anything else. This quality is so important that, if you don’t develop it to a high degree, it is impossible for you to ever achieve what you are truly capable of achieving.

The quality that I am talking about is the quality of self-discipline. It is a habit, a practice, a philosophy and a way of living. All successful men and women are highly disciplined in the important work that they do. All unsuccessful men and women are undisciplined and unable to control their behaviors and their appetites. And when you develop the same levels of high, personal discipline possessed by the most successful people in our society, you will very soon begin to achieve the same results that they do.

All great success in life is preceded by long, sustained periods of focused effort on a single goal, the most important goal, with the determination to stay with it until it is complete. Throughout history, we find that every man or woman who achieved anything lasting and worthwhile, had engaged in long, often unappreciated hours, weeks, months and even years of concentrated, disciplined work, in a particular direction.

Fortunately the quality of self-discipline is something that you can learn by continuous practice, over and over, until you master it. Once you have mastered the ability to delay gratification, the ability to discipline yourself to keep your attention focused on the most important task in front of you, there is virtually no goal that you cannot accomplish and no task that you cannot complete.

Successful people engage in activities that are goal-achieving. Unsuccessful people engage in activities that are tension-relieving. Successful people discipline themselves to have dinner before dessert. Unsuccessful people prefer to have dessert most of the time.

Successful people plan their work, and work their plan. They take the time to think through their responsibilities before they begin. They make clear decisions which they then implement immediately. They get a lot more done in a shorter period of time than the average person. And it all has to do with their disciplines.

Perhaps the most important benefit of self-discipline is the personal benefit that you receive. Every act of self-discipline increases your self-esteem. It gives you a feeling of personal power and accomplishment. Each time you discipline yourself to persist in the face of distractions, diversions, and disappointments, you feel better about yourself. As you continue to discipline yourself, you achieve more and more in life. As you achieve more things, you feel more like a winner. Your self-confidence goes up. You feel happier about yourself. You get more done and you have more energy. You earn the respect and esteem of the people around you. You get more rapid promotions and are paid more money. You live in a nicer house, drive a nicer car, and wear nicer clothes. You get a natural high from the thrill of achievement. And the more things that you achieve as the result of employing your personal habits of effectiveness and productivity, the more eager you are to achieve even higher and better tasks. Your life gets onto an upward spiral of success and happiness. You feel great about yourself most of the time.

Every act of self-discipline strengthens every other discipline in your life. Every weakness of self-discipline weakens your other disciplines as well. When you make a habit of disciplining yourself in little things, like flossing your teeth every night, you’ll soon become able to discipline yourself to accomplish even larger things, like working long, long hours to bring a major task to completion.

Your entire life is an on-going battle between the forces of doing what is right and necessary on the one hand and doing what is fun and easy on the other hand. It is a battle between the forces of discipline and the forces of ease or expediency. And when you develop the strength of character that gives you complete self-mastery, self-control and self-discipline, you feel wonderful about yourself. You develop a deep inner sense of strength and confidence. You replace positive thinking with positive knowing. You reach the point inside where you absolutely know that you can do whatever it takes to achieve any goal that you can set for yourself.

Self-discipline is its own reward. Not only does it pay off in terms of greater self-esteem and a more positive mental attitude, but it pays off throughout your life in terms of the goals that you achieve and the success that you attain in everything you do.

Self-discipline is a skill and a habit that can be learned by practice. Every time you practice a little self-discipline, you become stronger and stronger. Bit by bit, you become more capable of even greater disciplines. As you become a totally self-disciplined individual, your entire future opens up in front of you like a broad highway. Everything becomes possible for you and your future becomes unlimited.

You’ve watched the wealthy long enough. Now it’s time for you to have abundance and prosperity in your life as well. It’s not impossible. You only need two things: a passionate desire and will of steel. Without these two, you will encounter frustration and give up – never knowing that your breakthrough was just around the corner.

Everything starts with your desire. How much do you really want it? Are you willing to do whatever it takes? It will be uncomfortable and many times you will think you are crazy – but prosperity laws as outlined in this article are constant and infallible. Make a commitment to follow through until you see the results and you will. You have been forewarned. Now let’s get you rich.

How do you view the world? Is it a constant parade of problems and challenges coming to face you day after day after day? Stop right there. If you answered yes then that’s your problem – you are expecting negative situations to present themselves to you and the universe will have no choice but comply. See the good and beautiful in the world and it will only be too happy to reveal itself to you. I know, hope unrealized hurts – there is no discounting that. But understand that whatever hurt you in the past is over and you didn’t know better then. Now you know you can hope with expectancy because you are created and empowered to change the very world.

This brings us to the next foundational principle in prosperity attraction – take control of your life. Too often we have been tossed and turned by the winds of fortune. No more. You cannot control certain things but your attitude and subsequent course of action can catapult you to higher ground. Choose the words that you speak and the thoughts that you entertain, it is more powerful than you think.

You cannot see the manifestation of wealth until you see yourself rich in your mind’s eye. Envision it, meditate on it, and own it. Prosperity laws guarantee that your conviction will determine the life you will live. Is it ill health? Expect to be sickly and plagued with medicine bills. Is it good fortune? Then that is exactly what you will have.

Let me ask you, what do you do when you know you are expecting a windfall of sorts? Don’t you make preparations to receive it? Maybe opening a bank account for projected financial rewards or taking extra care of your physical form in anticipation for that perfect spouse. The thoughts you have deliberately nurtured will result in you doing what needs to be done when your blessing finally shows up.

Be always thankful and enjoy everything that you have right now. Abundance and prosperity should start where you are and not at the end of a completed checklist. It’s pretty simple really. And the best thing about it all is this: Live this way and you will find wealth to be incidental to the contentment of the life you are now living.

Learn about coping with stress in your life right now by implementing effective stress management techniques, find out about taking control of you life right now, and learn how to put into place your own personal development plan that is really going to work!

If you’re interested in taking control of your life, you will be interested in this guest article from one of my co-authors in “The Path to Success” – Brian Tracy.

Brian’s new book lays out a personal development plan that will see you taking control of your life in record time. Here’s what Brian has to say …

Rising to the Challenge
By: Brian Tracy

It’s like things that go bump in the night. Only in this case it’s about things that go bump in your life.

The only way that you can realize your full potential, and become everything you are capable of becoming, is by dealing with crunch points effectively. The only way that you can achieve all your goals is by responding and reacting effectively to the inevitable crises of day-to-day life.

The Key to performing at your best during the crunch times of your life is for you to focus single-mindedly on the solutions rather than the problems. The more you think about possible solutions, the more solutions will occur to you - and the better they will be. The more you think about solutions rather than problems, the more positive, focused, and creative you will become. The more you think in terms of specific actions you can take, the more in control you will be.

The most important quality of leadership is the ability to function well in a crisis. It can be said that leadership is the ability to solve problems, of all kinds, including huge problems that arise suddenly and unexpectedly.

No matter what you do, unexpected problems are sure to pop up. One minute things are rolling along smoothly then BAM! All hell breaks loose.

Your biggest customer files for bankruptcy and leaves you out in the cold. Your business is already cash-strapped, now what do you do?

The economy is kicking you below the belt. You just lost your job. It’s not fair! You’ve worked hard yet things just seem to happen when you least expect it.

Unexpected personal and financial problems can hit you or your business at any time. Suddenly you find yourself up against the wall. You feel like you went from 100 to 0 miles per hour in sixty seconds.

Now you’re in a crunch.

What you do next is vital if you want to survive your challenge. You can freak out. Cop out…Or face it head-on in a cool, relaxed and stress-free way. The choice is yours.

When I first started out in business, I faced many challenges. Not all of them were expected. What seemed overwhelming at first gradually became less severe as I learned how to deal with each situation effectively.

Sometimes it seems like challenges come rapid fire one after the other. Just remember none of these problems are your fault. Life happens to all of us.

After years of putting out fires and coping with unexpected crises, I developed a system for dealing with the inevitable life and business emergencies we all face.

During this time I created Crunch Point as a way to help me cope with these annoying situations. Now you can benefit from my experience. You don’t have to do it alone.

Remember it’s not the situation; its how you perceive it and more importantly how you deal with it. If you let it get to you emotionally it can eat you alive. Your personal power comes from controlling your response.

Sure it sounds easy to say but you and I know it sure doesn’t feel that way.

In my book Crunch Point I give you 21 proven ways to overcome any crazy situation you may be facing. Personal or financial it doesn’t matter. You will be in control of things now.

Imagine yourself:

Taking control of any situation - You are in charge, feel the power

Staying cool and rational while others are falling apart – You are in control

Identifying and removing all obstacles to resolving your problem – No roadblocks

Dealing with your problems quickly and effectively – You are unstoppable

Generate cash-flow to solve your financial problems – You are stress-free

Knowing when to cut your losses and walk away – You are a savvy business person

Whatever inevitable and unexpected problems may arise in your future you’ll be ready. Why waste your valuable time trying to figure it out on your own? These proven techniques have worked for me and they will work for you. I guarantee it.

The best part is you can start right now…
