Establishing goals in business is fundamental to having and implementing a clear vision. As part of an overall business planning strategy, you should establish specific goals. both short and long term. It is axiomatic, really, as goal setting in any area of your life is a very similar process. It is of course important to implement your plan, measure your progress towards reaching your goal and then evaluate the outcome objectively.

Unfortunately many of us fail to establish realistic goals from the outset, with little or no clarity of vision on how the goals may be implemented effectively.

For example, setting a goal to earn $25,000 per month within three months, when your present earnings are less than $1,000 in that same period, is probably unrealistic. On the other hand, setting an ongoing goal to increase your earnings by 5% or 10% per month is not only realistic, but more likely to be achievable. And then you will reach your $25,000 per month goal in no time.

So once you have defined a goal you believe you can accomplish, the next step is to break it down into smaller, manageable tasks and scheduling them in sequence (assuming that one task depends on the completion of another). Before defining the target date by which the overall goal must be completed, be certain that each task is given a realistic amount of time for completion. Allow the sum of the tasks to define the completion date, rather than arbitrarily selecting one.

It is helpful to schedule regular progress reviews. If you work alone, that is not an obstacle to reviewing your progress regularly, although it is much easier to slip into old patterns of not regularly reviewing your progress, which in turn will interfere with your goal being reached.

However, don’t go overboard with this. Avoid implementing a goal management process that consumes more time than the goal itself. Yes, it is sometimes almost as easy to fall into this trap when working alone, as it is to avoid undertaking progress reviews at all.

Aside from actually working the process towards eventually realizing your goal, the final step is to take some time to evaluate the overall process and your performance at the end. This should be done objectively and embraced as a learning opportunity, one that will help you to improve your performance the next time.

With proper planning, setting realistic goals can only benefit you and your business in the long run, especially if you streamline the goal management process for yourself. If you think of it as an evolving process focused on continual performance improvement, over time you really will see a measurable improvement in everything you do.

So stop procrastinating – take pen and paper now and identify some realistic goals for your business.

Here comes a new year with new opportunities for everyone to assert themselves in any field of activity and in any area of life. 2009 apparently is a year that does not promise too much because of the world financial and economic crisis we are already experiencing. However, it would be quite a pity for us not to set at least some personal and professional goals since these are the most dominant of the areas in which all of us want improvement.

On the one hand, personal goals should not miss from anyone?s life even despite this coming year with its somber predictions. It is important that we all want to preserve our peace and happiness in the bosom of our own families. For this to come true, let us remember that we should remain the same caring persons full of love and understanding; if concern and care have not been our strongest points so far, then perhaps it is time now to become a little more considerate and supportive towards our family members especially if we notice that the professional goals of our beloved ones are in no way going to be achieved this year.

If career is disappointing, then family and friends should at least feel that they are successful within the family realm so that self-confidence remains at a decent level. Moreover, health is, as well, an aspect that should not be neglected. Good shape and wellness of each individual represent one goal that should be maintained no matter what, and action should be taken in that direction.

On the other hand, we may expect our professional goals not to be so well met this year. But even so, the career realm should not be devoid of goals. It is however best if our goals are a little more humble than they were last year before the financial strike we have received. If we do not aim very high there are more chances that we may achieve success and not register failures.

Examples of such goals could be to climb the hierarchical ladder within your company, to get a raise due to your exquisite performance and dedication, to get more responsibilities and opportunities to learn more and grow professionally, to change one?s job for a better one, and so on. If these professional goals however are set too high and you expect too much before the recession is over, you might get exactly the opposite while avoiding precisely that which may be considered one of the smartest professional goals for 2009. All this being said, may you enjoy all the luck in the world!

Are you in your twenties and feel that something is missing from your life? Are you not sure which direction to take, what to do next? Well, there are very many people, even older than you are who have been having the same problem. We don’t go through life as empty shells, we create us, our universe and relationships every moment. Have you ever thought that perhaps your life is missing one big picture? That you have not set personal goals the achieving of which would actually give you a feeling of self-confidence and satisfaction? Don’t let fear, criticism or negative attitudes set you back, action is the best solution!

Without personal goals one may easily end up with a feeling of failure or pointlessness, and that will surely not make life seem any more interesting than it already is. Therefore, you should take a bit of time off from whatever it is that you do and think about what you want to do with your life. Take each of the fields that you might set personal goals in one after another and analyze yourself. These fields of activity or of interest may differ from one individual to another, yet they may include art, family, career, health, finance, education, behavior and attitude, fun, etc.

Ask yourself whether each point is important for you, feel your way and understand what you would like to achieve. First ask yourself what you would love to be like from the perspective of those personal goals in ten or fifteen years? time. And after setting long term goals, break them down into smaller goals that are designed for shorter periods. You can break these long term personal goals down into monthly or weekly or even daily goals if you practice enough patience and offer dedication to this process of life planning.

It is again very important that you decide on these personal goals by taking into account 5 criteria such as specificity, measurability, attainability, relevance and time. In one word, make sure your goals are SMART. The theory of the smart goals has been developed and widely used in personal counseling and training with great results so far. It is very important that you do not set goals that are too hard to achieve. If so, and if fulfilling one hard goal has taken longer than expected, next you can establish goals that are a little easier to achieve, and the other way round.

There are people who come to a point in their life when they feel overwhelmed by the tasks they have to perform either at work or at home. It seems a very radical situation out of which no escape can be foreseen especially when these people are demoralized because of their more or less declared workload. But what they do not know is that they don’t all suffer from overworking. The only trouble could be poor time management, and that can be fixed with a little care and some smart tricks.

According to specialists, time management is a set of tools, skills and methods designed and used to meet certain previously stipulated or well-defined goals and tasks. The concept in itself is very complex and should make reference to numerous activities like planning, deciding on goals, analyzing the time invested in carrying out a task, organizing steps or stages of one?s activity, monitoring and constantly scheduling work based on pointing out priorities.

In the United States there is one very popular saying that has encompassed the globe and has been met on the lips of many other nations lately: time is money. This has become one of the most important principles of successful business companies and individuals and has led to creating training on the concept of time management. Why has it become so important? you may ask yourself. Well, one reason is that money that is lost can be obtained back by the investor after redressing and correcting the scheme she/he has relied on until then. One unsuccessful business scheme especially if associated with faulty time management can cost a lot and can turn one into a pretty desperate person.

Sometimes, lack of good time management in all fields and ranges of activity can lead to panic and frustration. If your reaction is one that may be described by panic, the first thing you need to do is to calm down and assess the situation. Be as realistic as possible and based on your findings, draw another plan that is meant to get you out of the problem you find yourself in at the moment. If your feeling is one of frustration, the one very important thing you need to do is accept defeat and acknowledge the fact that it is normal to feel that way.

However, remember you are not to feel sorry for yourself for too long, but you should take action by reviewing and correcting the situation making use of the tools of planning, scheduling and prioritizing. And this time, make sure you focus a bit more on time management.

Motivation is defined as that set of principles or things that determine one to perform something and achieve success in what he or she has undertaken. They say that without it we would all be but a bunch of passive, lazy people that seem to have no goal in life. And indeed, ever since we came to understand the world around us, at a very young age, we have keptgetting involved in experiences filled with many motivating factors. Do you want the candy? You have to work for it just a little bit and listen to mammy. This is how it all starts. Therefore, without even becoming aware of what we undergo, we are taught the very basics of responding to motivation.

Motivation seems to appear when, after performing a certain action, there is some kind of reward that creates pleasure or satisfaction to the individual who receives it. The reward in itself can be of an intrinsic nature, meaning that the feeling of achievement or satisfaction is sufficient to repeat the action later; it can also be extrinsic, according to studies; and that means that money or praise coming from others is the key to making you repeat the performance. As a result, motivation is also of two kinds ? intrinsic, or inner, and extrinsic, or outer. As it may be obvious to you already, intrinsic motivation has to do with your own person and what you want whereas the extrinsic type has to do with external factors or people. The intrinsic type of motivation is also divided into two more subcategories. One is the intrinsic motivation that relies on enjoyment (let us take a hobby for example) while the other is the one that is based on obligation (like performing a task at work that we want to carry out very well only for our own sake and not for anyone else?s).

As previously mentioned, motivation is one of the most important things that guides us through life. This is the thing that has made us take our first steps, that has helped us in learning how to pronounce certain words correctly, that has guided us in school years and university studies perhaps, that has made us get a job, get married, have children, provide the best for our children and want to grow old within a home full of peace and warmth. Motivation can take many forms and can be related to many things.

Education and learning skills are of great concern for parents with small children: will they speak and write correctly? Will they make it to college? In school students are supposed to learn and acquire the writing skill, for instance, based on the activities held in class and at home during homework and assignments given by teachers or instructors. But unfortunately, the writing goals that need to be achieved in order for them to be fully functional in this society are not exactly met as they should be.

One reason for this is that writing goals may not be very well defined at the national educational level. There should be made a clear cut distinction between practical writing that we may come across on a daily basis and creative writing that some teachers seem to focus on in some schools. It is indeed very interesting to challenge your students and pupils to try something new and set the imagination free, but let us not forget that writing was initially invented to serve very pragmatic purposes ? communication of ideas and information.

Writing a CV or a cover letter are two examples of practical forms of writing that many members of our society seem to have difficulty in, and I wonder why… So then, why should you expect that person to be able to come up with an innovating descriptive paragraph when the most basic things about him or her cannot be put on a piece of paper in a coherent, reader-friendly manner?

Another reason why writing goals are not met is that there is not enough practice with writing at the level and in the manner that is required by our society. Home assignments are designed and given so that they are not very difficult or challenging for the child. Instead children that arrive home, log on chat programs where they use coded language or shortened way of typing words and expressing themselves. With less and less focus on writing compositions in class and at home and more and more informal, out-of-the-institution emphasis on brevity, simplicity and fun in writing, our kids are losing even those skills they may have rather passively acquired in class and at home.

Moreover, essays and compositions seems to rely on information that is copy-pasted from another source than their own creation and readily available on the Internet. As a result, teachers and instructors should be more concerned with writing goals and meeting them, making sure that the rules applied to writing throughout life for social and practical purposes are also applied and required at the schooling level.

All in all, we should become aware that a correct guiding of an individual?s first steps in his/her writing experience, a motivating description and explanation of the necessity of this skill throughout their life may make students more oriented towards achieving practical writing goals. In addition, it may result in a lack of disappointment and feeling of helplessness along a later in-development career path.

As our society progresses we come up with more and more theories concerning various aspects of our lives, each apparently smarter than the previous. The same goes for trying to achieve success in life, be it in the professional or private life areas. The popular and rather widespread impression about how to set goals is to make a plan or get an itinerary exactly as you do when going on a trip. Without a plan or itinerary it is very difficult to get where you want to regardless of whether the goals are short or long term.

As a result, the theory on how to set goals relies on a wide range of tips or pieces of advice. One such tip offers you the steps you are to use in order to make this task of how to set goals simpler for everyone. The most important of all is to make a decision about where you want to get to or what you would like to achieve. Without actually visualizing your success in the back of your mind and getting as many details as possible about it, it would be very tough to actually accomplish your established tasks. Therefore the question of how to set goals becomes complex and even problematic.

You need to analyze the situation you are in at the present moment, try to collect as much information about your purpose as possible, learn about the skills you need to have in order to achieve to goal, find out about the resources you can use on your way to getting there and establish whether the plan you are to make is realistic and achievable.

Next on how to set goals and stick to them, is taking small steps but keeping on track. It is highly recommendable that you do not expect to carry out huge steps or achieve great goals immediately because failure will be waiting for you around the corner. If this should happen, review your plan and see what amends you have to make in order for it to become a bit more realistic.

Another tip related to how to set goals is the use of language when you formulate them. Psychological studies today, encourage us to use as much positive language as possible regardless of why or to whom we want to send a message to. So why should we not apply that when talking to ourselves if we already do it when talking to others?

Instead of saying: I won?t miss my Pilates session at the gym today we could say: I know I will miss the Pilates session today so I will take twenty minutes to practice at home by myself. See the difference? It is vital that no negative language is used when you set goals so that all channels of thought stay positive and are open when you review your plan for the day or for the week.

Career and personal life cannot do without setting goals nowadays. It is all about planning, sticking to the plan, adjusting as one makes progress and adapting, acting constantly towards one greater goal and finally achieving it. But while planning, one may discover that there are things that he or she may want to achieve in a relatively short period of time while others are planned over a longer interval. This is what makes the difference between short term goals and long term ones.

Some people will say that short term goals should be defined according to the plan you make when you first set them. If the period of time stays within one month those are definitely short term goals, but if the time extends to half a year or more, you are already looking at long term ones. What they fail to see, is that you cannot speak about short term goals without having in mind long term ones.

We can only think and plan the former against the background of the latter. For example, you could measure short term aims for yourself in days while someone else will measure their own aims of this kind in months or even in years; that is why the relativity concept in defining short term goals as done in the previous paragraph has a very important role.

One essential aspect to take into consideration when setting short term goals is that you need to be very specific and also very realistic about the planning. If you imagine that teaching your students past tense next week is a well defined and smart goal, you will probably not be able to achieve it. You need to think these types of goals in even more specific terms.

Make clear the difference between regular and irregular verbs next Tuesday morning in class between 9 and 11: this would probably sound more realistic. In this last example, the planner has set upon something that is small indeed, achievable and realistic for a two hour period. That is probably one of the short term goals that a teacher would consider a step in his or her great plan or long term goal of enabling foreign students to understand and use correctly past tense forms of verbs after teaching, reinforcing, practicing and testing for at least several weeks of an English course.

Hoping that this has made clear the difference between short term goals and long term ones, the only thing left is to advise you to stick to the plans you have made and demonstrate perseverance in order to achieve success.
